Preparation for the DELE Exam (A1–C2)

updated June 2026 reading 6 min

DELE is the official unlimited diploma in Spanish from Instituto Cervantes (on behalf of the Spanish Ministry of Education), covering levels A1–C2. It is recognized worldwide by universities, employers, and government agencies. The key to success is a confident vocabulary at your level and familiarity with the exam format.

What is DELE

DELE tests four skills — reading, listening, writing, and speaking — across levels A1B2 and above (C1, C2). The diploma is valid indefinitely, which is convenient for portfolios and admissions.

For Spanish citizenship, a DELE level A2 certificate is typically required, along with the CCSE knowledge of Spain test — more details can be found in the guide Spanish for Emigration.

Vocabulary by Levels

The vocabulary grows with each level: for B1, you need a solid set of everyday themes (about two to two and a half thousand words), and for B2, you need more abstract vocabulary and argumentative skills. Build your vocabulary by topics and reinforce it through repetition. Try the flashcard:

How to Prepare

Preparation is structured in two layers. The first is to raise your language skills to the target level: build your vocabulary using flashcards and practice speaking out loud from the start.

The second layer is format: work through official practice exams to get used to the structure of the written and oral components. Timelines for reaching levels are in the guide how long it takes to learn Spanish.
